Friar Jude Winkler's Ghana Homilies

Do you ever wonder what life as a Catholic and as a Conventual Franciscan is like? Are you interested in Catholic spirituality as a way to live your life? Renowned homilist Friar Jude Winkler recently delivered five fascinating homilies covering precisely these topics at the Conventual Franciscan Mission in Ghana. Friar Jude Winkler is an internationally renowned homilist. He travelled to Ghana specifically to preach.

The Conventual Franciscan Friars from St. Anthony Province in the USA have been in Ghana since the 1970s. They started the mission along with their brothers from St. Anthony Province in Padua, Italy to help establish the Conventual Franciscan Order and to serve the people of Ghana. Once vocations of local Ghanians increased, the Friars from the USA allowed them to run the mission. Currently the Franciscan mission in Ghana is a custody under the direction of St. Anthony Province in Padua, Italy. The Friars from St. Anthony Province in the USA currently have one friar in Ghana who serves as novice director. They also financially support Padre Pio Village, a local lepper colony.

Homily One: God's Plan for Us (1 hour and 3 minutes long)

Friar Jude begins to speak about  God's plan for us and our special and constant relationship with Him. We can never fully understand God's plan, but must trust in it. Conventual Franciscans believe that everything happens for a reason because it is part of God’s plan.

Homily Two: Jesus' Earthly Mission (33 minutes long)

Jesus was born into humble circumstances. He allowed the poor to recognize who He was first. Jesus' message was not one of a conquering Messiah. Instead, he came to Earth to serve humanity and to suffer for us.

Homily Three: The Vow of Poverty (43 minutes long)

Conventual Franciscan Friars take a vow of poverty. Poverty can be defined in many ways. The key issue however is to avoid the rampant materialism that plagues Western society as a life goal. To do this one should adopt simplicity, meaning God is in charge and life will happen on His time. Friars must also learn to see the various inconveniences in life as a blessing. These can teach us about others and the world.

Homily Four: The Vow of Chastity (43 minutes long)

The Vow of Chastity is an eschatological virtue. In the Old Testament, Jeremiah could not get married because he lived during end-time. Special work needed to be done.

Catholicism introduced a moral factor to humanity. Jesus taught that we must love everyone and not thirst for revenge. Catholic laws present a spiritual  factor as well.  A person can be hurt physically and also in spirit..

Homily Five: Expression of Love (34 minutes long)

God calls us to love, sacrifice and to change our lives for the better. As Catholics and Franciscans we need to express our love and not simply go through the motions. Our spirituality has to be fresh and powerful.

God uses our strengths and weakness to  fulfill His plan. The Apostle Simon Peter may have been impetuous, but God used his impetuosity to spread our faith.
