A Conventual Franciscan First:
Friar Bill Callahan Appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Milwaukee
Milwaukee Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan and Bishop-elect William P. Callahan
VATICAN, October 30, 2007 - Friar William P. Callahan has become the first Conventual Franciscan in North America to be elevated to the episcopacy as auxiliary bishop of Milwaukee by Pope Benedict XVI. A native of Chicago, Friar Bill was born in 1950 and had recently worked as spiritual director at the Pontifical North American College in Rome.
With a Master in Theology from the University of Toronto, Friar Bill was ordained a priest in 1977, seven years after his simple profession. He has since served in a variety of positions, starting in 1977 as Parochial Vicar at the Basilica of Saint Josaphat in Milwaukee, moving on to Vocations Director for St. Bonaventure Province, then working as Parochial Vicar and pastor of Holy Family parish in Peoria, Illinois, rector of the Basilica of St. Josaphat in Milwaukee again, and finally as Spiritual Director of the Pontifical North American College in Rome.
