In fact, in many countries leprosy is still destroying lives. To westerners, leprosy is a disease of the past. We can never exactly know what it felt like to live at the beginning of the 13th century when Francis of Assisi wandered the roads of Italy. Our minds are firmly planted in the here and now. At Viterbo University (in La Crosse, Wisconsin), there is however an imaginative way through which one can to touch Franciscan history. It's called Franciscan Fest.

The Franciscan Life Center in Meriden, Connecticut was founded in 1974 by the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist. Its mission is very broad in scope. On the center’s homepage, the Franciscan sisters define it as
“to affect change in the hearts of men and women looking for perspective and purpose in their lives.”

Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, California

  Most North Americans live in urbanized areas and often do not get a chance to experience creation. Various responsibilities task their time to the point where there is none of it left for reflection on the greatness of the natural world. Recently, however, a group of Santa Clara University students – including Tracy Mangin, Ann Thomas, and Jessica Reimer – had the opportunity to do just that. They took two courses the underlying purpose of which was to move closer to nature and fulfill the Franciscan teaching of caring for creation.

The truth is that all of us have prejudices of one sort or another. Often these prejudices are unconscious and held by seemingly tolerant people; discovering that one is actually prejudiced against other individuals can be an unsettling experience.

St. Francis High School in Athol Springs, New York Celebrates Academic and Professional Excellence

 
Dr. Geoffrey Bernas worked for the University at Buffalo Bulls Football team
 
This fall Dr. Geoffrey Bernas was recognized for his achievements by the Padua Scholars Program at St. Francis High School in Athol Springs, New York. Dr. Bernas graduated from St. Francis High School in 1993, completing his BS at Canisius College in 1997 and his MD at the State University of New York Upstate Medical School. He went on to work for the University at Buffalo Bulls Football program, the University of Michigan, the Empire State Games, and Western New York High School Football. Currently, Dr. Bernas fills the position of Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University at Buffalo. Read further...
