St. Bonaventure University Students and Professor Make Their Mark

Students bound for Uganda
St. Bonaventure University in St. Bonaventure, New York is a first rate post-secondary institution with a renowned academic program. Founded in 1858 by the Franciscan Friars, the university maintains a strong Franciscan tradition held dear by many of its students. Five of these students recently traveled to Bethlehem, Uganda on a mission of service with journalism and mass communication professor, Pauline Hoffmann.
Students Zachary Rodriguez, Lindsay Pohlman, Matthew Keenan, Erin Danahy, Rachel Siepierski, and Professor Hoffman traveled to Uganda to develop a micro-loan program and educate local citizens in financial management. They worked out of the Bethlehem Parents School where a majority of its 350 students are orphans.

Health education and lectures on the development of personal talents were all on the St. Bonaventure group’s agenda. They were sponsored by the St. Bonaventure University chapter of the Students in Free Enterprise organization and by Both Your Hands, a group that connects American communities to impoverished settlements in need of help.

Uganda
The St. Bonaventure University students’ efforts have helped in planting a seed of self-sufficiency in Bethlehem, Uganda. In the time that they spent in Uganda, the students were not only able to serve others, but also had the opportunity to learn about the varied and complicated nature of the world.
