Dr. Bernas’ career and his visit to St. Francis High School reflect the Franciscan emphasis on education. St. Francis High School is run by the Order of Friars Minor Conventual. The standard of education at the school is excellent and the friars do their utmost to open up the mind of every pupil to the greatness of learning. This opening up of minds is a very important task that every educator across the United States should embrace.

In an interconnected, globalized world, topnotch education and a lifelong willingness to learn is what young Americans need. Franciscans have been pursuing learning for the last eight hundred years, opening their minds to ideas from around the planet. They encourage learning because through it our world expands. The more we learn the greater is our breadth of understanding of the various complexities of humanity. And to understand what is going on means to be empowered.
We encourage you our readers to send in stories where you see the spirit of St. Francis at work in the world. Email your stories to Peter Rajchert at peter@franciscans.org.
