World Youth Day 2008 -

The North American Celebration

Martyrs' Shrine in Midland, Ontario

Many young people in North America will not be able to attend World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia this July. They however still have a chance to come together in community and celebrate their faith. The Office of Catholic Youth (Archdiocese of Toronto) will be hosting a World Youth Day 2008 Ontario Regional Celebration from July 17th to July 20th at the Martyrs' Shrine in Midland Ontario. Pilgrims have until June 20th to register.

Georgian Bay

Midland is about 178 miles from Buffalo, New York and 92 miles from Toronto, Ontario. A small community of 16,700 souls, it sits on the summer vacationer's paradise of Georgian Bay and is surrounded by Southern Ontario's picturesque countryside of warm, golden fields and forests of maples and pine.

Within this inviting setting sits the Martyrs' Shrine. At 80 years old, the Martyrs' Shrine is only one of two national shrines in Canada, the other one being St. Joseph's Oratory in Montreal, Quebec.

Young people will celebrate their faith in Ontario

During the celebration at Martyrs' Shrine, pilgrims can expect catechesis, music, Mass, adoration, and a direct video link on a 30 square foot screen to some of the events at the World Youth Day festivities in Sydney. The keynote speaker at the Ontario celebration will be Craig Kielburger. Mr. Kielburger is a world renowned social advocate, writer, and co-founder with his brother Craig of the Kiel Network. The Kiel Network is a group of organizations with the mission of empowering young people as agents of positive change in the world.
