Friars Justin Ross and Eric de la Pena Become Deacons

On Saturday, May 17, 2008, Friars Justin Ross and Eric de la Pena were ordained to the Diaconate at St. Joseph Cupertino Friary in Ellicott City, Maryland. Auxiliary Bishop for Baltimore, Denis Madden, presided over the ceremony. The occasion itself proved to be a great opportunity for the Conventual Franciscan community and its supporters to come together and celebrate God's work here on Earth.

The ministry of deacon in the Roman Catholic Church is one of charity, proclaiming and preaching the Gospel and service at the altar.  In union with the local bishop and in collaboration with the priests, the deacon inspires and motivates the community in its charitable work.  Liturgically, a deacon proclaims the Gospel and he may preach.  Deacons also serve at the altar.  Deacons may baptize and witness marriages  This page has a selection of photographs with Friars Eric and Justin, the two new deacons.  Friars Eric and Justin are transitional deacons, serving in this ministry until they are ordained presbyters (i.e. priests) on November 15.
