Our Mission

Saint Francis of Assisi always referred to himself as "Brother Francis." Immediately, from the time someone met him, Saint Francis declared a relationship - he was brother to everyone he met. In his famous Canticle of the Creatures , Saint Francis calls on "Brother Sun" and "Sister Moon," and refers to different parts of creation as "brother" or "sister." With every experience of every part of creation, Francis was brother.

Francis of Assisi wrote a Letter to the Entire Order of Friars minor throughout the world. In that letter, Francis explained his mission:

"Give praise to Him because He is good; exalt Him by your deeds; for this reason He has sent you into the whole world: that you may bear witness to His voice in word and deed and bring everyone to know that there is no one who is all-powerful except Him."

His message is timeless; to give praise to God, living the Gospel of Jesus Christ as brothers. Whether we work in parishes or schools; soup kitchens or hospitals; retreat centers or foreign missions; homeless shelters or nursing homes; university campuses or grammar schools; graduate theological schools or tutoring centers; in every place, with each person and with all of creation, we, as brothers to them all, give praise to God. We care for one another as brothers and we recognize all of God's children and all of creation as brother or sister.

We are committed to the poor and vulnerable, issues of peace and justice, inter-religious dialogue and the safeguarding of creation. In a word, we live the Gospel of Jesus Christ by caring for ALL of our brothers and sisters and thus praise God for all He has made. The invitation to Join the BrotherHood is an invitation to be part of this mission of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We always exercise our mission within the Catholic Church.
