The Feast of Pentecost - May 11, 2008

On Sunday, May 11, 2008, we celebrate the feast of Pentecost. It was on the feast of Pentecost, fifty days after Jesus' resurrection that the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apsotles giving them the gift of tongues and the strength to start their missions of proselytization. Pentecost is a great festival that marks the birth of the Church by the power of the Holy Spirit.

In the Jewish tradition, Pentecost was known as the feast of Shavuot. It celebrated the yearly harvest. The Apostles were partaking in this event when a strong wind and tongues of fire leaped around them. This was the Holy Spirit. It entered each apostle, preparing him for a life of missions through which our Christian faith was established.

Red is the liturgical color for this day.  Red recalls the tongues of flame in which the Holy Spirit descended on the first Pentecost.  The color red also reminds us of the blood of the martyrs.
