Vocation News

On March 19, 2018, the Admissions Board of the Province had its last meeting of the Quadrennium. During it, they reviewed the applications of two men who desire to share our life. Both of them were unanimously recommended to the Very Reverend Fr. James McCurry, OFM Conv., our Minister Provincial, for acceptance into the Postulancy for July 2018 and were accepted. Those two men will join with a previously accepted candidate in forming part of the St. Bonaventure Friary North American Interprovincial Postulant Community, in Chicago, beginning on July 2, 2018.

This week, our Province Vocation Director, Fr. Russell Governale, OFM Conv. attended the Sophomore Retreat at our ministry of Archbishop Curley High School (Baltimore, MD). Fr. Matt Foley, OFM Conv., who serves as Campus Minister, Instructor and Advisor for FYM (Franciscan Youth Ministry) there, presented Friar Russell with four young men who are considering a call to Franciscan Life. Although young, they are open to the Holy Spirit in their lives prompting them to consider a Call to the life of a Franciscan Friar Conventual. Those students witness our friars ministering at Curley; inspiring others to follow Jesus in the way of Francis. This week, we also have a student from our Campus Ministry at Duke Catholic Center visiting one of our Houses of Formation, as he discerns our way of life. Please remember him in your prayers!

As Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter arrive, Friar Russell encourages all of you who know and support our friars, to also invite the young men in your lives who may not have encountered our friars in ministry, to consider sharing our charism. He asks that you invite those men who you feel might have been Called, to join you for Mass or for other celebrations at one of our many ministry locations. Please feel comfortable in introducing those men to one of our friars, on site. Share our Vocations page, as well as our Novitiate page and our Order’s North American Interprovicial Vocation Site, so that he can more easily research the life of a friar, during his discernment process.

Young vocations need nourishment and God relies on each of us to encourage our family members, friends and co-workers to keep open hearts to follow God’s Call. This is the best vocation awareness we can promote. Your personal Christian witness to life and love in Christ will be the vehicle which God uses you to bring more men to us. Please continue to pray for and encourage all vocations.
